Gears Of War 2 Sound Effects

Here’s a neat video talking about what goes into making the sounds that will be in the new Gears of War 2 releasing Nov. 7th. I think it’d be really fun working on a project like this sometime.

An interesting factoid is that 85% of the audio in the game is new, according to Audio Director Mike Larson. There’s also a brief interview with the game’s composer, Steve Jablonsky, who did the music for Command & Conquer 3 and the Transformers movie.

Civilization 4: Colonization Debut Trailer

I’m not sure I see how sprucing up the graphics of the same old game makes it better. I guess we’ll see how the dynamics of the game change. Personally I’d like something I could get lost in for about a week instead of being able to beat it in one night.

Star Trek Movie

I’m a geek, won’t deny it. No matter how bad they were I’ve anxiously anticipate the arrival of each and every Star Trek movie. I was a little disappointed to hear the latest installment wouldn’t be a Next Generation film, I really enjoyed Nemesis but from everything I’m reading, the new movie, simply title “Star Trek” looks like it could be a kick ass flick and possible reboot this franchise putting it back on track for future movies.

The writer’s team had “endless discussions” about how to portray the gadgets, as well as all the other details of “style” and “esthetics,” Abrams said. “If you do the bridge of the Enterprise, what does it look like? Does Uhura has the piece in her, or does she not? And if she does, what does it look like? If they have tricorders, what do they look like? Phasers, how do you go from stun to kill, and does anything happen? What does the whole fleet look like? I’m telling you, every day, we were figuring this out, how do we take what we know and love and ‘Star Trek’ and apply it to a modern audience.”

Some of these details will be a little more hidden, Burk said, as easter eggs. “There will be appearances of things,” he said.

“We have family members who would disown us if we got any of those wrong,” said writer/producer Roberto Orci.

At the same time it’s meant for hardcore fans, “it’s designed very much to be seen if you don’t know anything about it,” Orci said, “including the story of how they all met. It’s finally, truly Star Trek Zero in a way. You don’t have to know anything.”

Personally I can’t wait, view the HD trailer at the official Star Trek movie website.

End Of The World Begins Wednesday

That’s right folks, say your prayers, hug your kids, get one last hurrah in with the miss’us because come Wednesday, the clock is ticking to the destruction of the world. I know, some of you are saying “What’s up with this whack job” but hear me out, the theory goes something like this. On Wednesday CERN is firing up the Large Hardron Collider to test the superconducting magnets that control the proton beams. WTF is that you ask? It’s a four billion dollar, 17 mile long tunnel where scientists are going to essentially smash atoms. Thus (according to the fatalist out there, creating “micro black holes” that destroy the world. Yeah, yeah, I know.. Huh?

The CERN collider is designed to push the proton beam close to the speed of light, whizzing 11,000 times a second around the tunnel 150 to 500 feet under the bucolic countryside on the French-Swiss border.

Once the beam is successfully fired counterclockwise, a clockwise test will follow. Then the scientists will aim the beams at each other so that protons collide, shattering into fragments and releasing energy under the gaze of detectors filling cathedral-sized caverns at points along the tunnel.

Ok, I know, I’m being more than a little cynical about it but come on, the basic point is to “see what will happen”. Isn’t that sort of like those old Star Trek episodes where Captain Kirk asked Mr. Scott to do something crazy like mix the matter and anti-matter together or something like that? This is assuming that the project doesn’t get shut down completely due to pending law suits trying to stop it. What’s the worst that could happen? The giant magnets alter the Earth gravitational field and bring about some cataclysmic global event that Al Gore himself would be proud of or maybe a black hole forming over the Swiss countryside that sucks up everything until the world implodes.

Nah, they’re probably running Windows so it more than likely won’t even boot up. Cheers!

10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Internet

Neatorama has a cool post listing 10 things you should know about the internet. A few of them are pretty obvious but I’ll admit more than a couple would have stumped me during a Trivial Pursuit game. Things like Gary Thuerk sent the first spam email and is considered the “Father of Spam” or that new blogs are appearing on the internet at a rate of 2 blogs a seconds or that most people use the terms Internet and World Wide Web interchangeably but they really represent two distinct things. Yeah, so check out the list and tell us f there’s anything they missed.

DeWalt M-16 Nail Gun

You gotta love the ingenuity of people sometimes. One Dave Wiggins was sitting around one day wondering what he should. After a little bit o thought, some inspiration and a trip to the local Dewalt factory service center, Dave came up with this most excellent rendition of a Dewalt M-16 Nail Gun.

Dave says, “I’d just picked up a new (to me) M-16 and was in the process of fixing it up a little. It needed new furniture anyway, so I sourced the safety yellow stock, guard, and grip. Then, I went down to the DeWalt factory service place a few miles from the house to get a sticker. There, I saw they had brand new battery casings, so I picked up one of those too. I got home, found a short magazine , and got to work.

That’s freaking cool stuff right there.
