Techlasers contacted me a while back asking if I wanted to review one of their green lasers. Being all about cool toys I agreed and it wasn’t long before they had sent me one of their Infiniti II Green Lasers. I gotta say these things are kick ass cool. It was especially fun on Halloween night while spooking in the local corn maze, I’m not sure which was more fun, scaring people in costume or freaking people out with the laser. It also made for great fun during the New Years countdown.

The laser itself comes packaged in a nice box and is accompanied by orange safety goggles and a note recommending they be worn when the laser is in use. They’re not lying, I aimed it down the hall and it was so bright I had to close my eyes. The casing is metal painted with a flat blue finish and comes with a silver carrying tube that’s very handy for traveling, allowing you to just stick it in your pocket.

The laser takes 2 AAA batteries, which it phenomenal considering how much power it puts out and what’s even better, they seem to last a good while. I’ve been playing with the laser off and on for several weeks now and the batteries last a pretty good while but I found that to get optimal performance from the laser you need good batteries. On a fresh set of batteries you can do things like burn holes in black plastic, pop black or dark balloons and light matches. We were able to pop a black balloon that was filled with air only, we tried serveral times to get it to pop one filled with water but it never would. We tried both warm and hot water in the balloon but it seemed the laser cooled too fast on the surface it would never penetrate. Oh well, it’s still powerful enough to be dangerous so caution should be exercised when using this laser and it makes a great pointer, especially if you’re star gazing, just don’t be pointing at any airplanes, that could get you a visit from some men in black suits.

Its designed by Weiss and his team (members from Stanford University, and Aalborg University, Denmark, along with company Collano of Switzerland; a team of 7 people with different backgrounds, such as mechanical engineering, process management, business development and industrial design, furthermore located in three countries around the world). It is very comfortable to the neck, which is achieved through a segmented flexible neck support.

As the story goes, solar panel manufacturer Schott Solar wanted to find a clever way to promote the fact that their panels come with a 20 year warranty. So the Saatchi & Saatchi ad agency in Frankfurt, Germany came up with this wall calendar that features a tear-off page for every day of the year, for the next 20 years. Understandably the 7,300+ pages end up sticking out about 2 feet from the wall, and it looks like it comes with a pair of pretty hefty screws for securing it. Sucks to be the sales team who has to carry around this promotional item.

That said, I will try to do what I’ve done with other photo narratives here, and tell a story of 2008 in photographs. It’s not the story of 2008, it’s certainly not all stories, but as a collection it does show a good portion of what life has been like over the past 12 months. This is a multi-entry story, 120 photographs over three days. Watch for part 2 and part 3 tomorrow and the next day. (40 photos total)
