What Is Halo 3 Recon?

Apparently there’s still some confusion going on about what the new Bungie release Halo 3 Recon is and what it isn’t. Kotaku gets it from the horses mouth what Halo 3 Recon is not.
Confused about Halo 3: Recon? Apparently some folks still are, so Bungie reps Luke Smith and Brian Jarrard wanted to get a few things out of the way, right off the bat, in our lovely afternoon Q&A session. Halo 3: Recon is not a tactical squad based shooter. Halo 3: Recon is not Splinter Cell: Halo. Halo 3: Recon is not Brothers In Arms: Halo. And there’s a very, very good chance you’ll never, ever run into Master Chief.
Halo 3 Recon
Well, here it is folks, the next title in what’s shaping up to be a half decade of Halo related games. Bungie’s update to Halo 3 is a full blown game title called Halo 3 Recon. Set to take place between Halo 2 and 3, the game doesn’t feature Master Chief at all, instead you play another another soldier type and will bring an unspecified number of multiplayer maps. Halo 3 Recon is slated for release in Fall 2009.
Bungie Reveals PRO Video Renderer

Team Bungie recently announced that in the not too distant future, Bungie PRO subscribers (who pay 750 MS points a year) will have the ability to take their Halo 3 film clips and render them into WMV through Bungie.net. Wowza! Specifics including resolution, how it functions and its rollout haven’t been announced yet, but keep your eyes peeled. More on the Bungie PRO video renderer.

Assembly Is Newest Halo 3 Map

Assembly is the newest Halo 3 map and I gotta say if the screenshots are to judge it’s going to be freaking awesome. There is no word from Bungie on when the map will be available yet but it’s a great teaser none-the-less.
Formerly known as the infinitely more ear-pleasing “Purple Reign”, the map will be playable by Halo uber-fans at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend.
Halo 4 Being Developed By Gearbox, So Says The Rumormill

As these things go this ranks right up there with the constant rumors about iPhone evolution. According to Joystiq a rumor is going around that has Gearbox developing Halo 4 for launch with the next-gen XBOX 720 probably somewhere around 2012. Supposedly there is more in the October issue of OXM but some interesting evidence is being thrown around.
First, Gearbox headman Randy Pitchford is quoted as saying they have a new project that’s going to be big.
I’ve started a new project. It’s big. It’s, like, look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger kind of big. I’m Directing it myself. I can’t mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you’ll likely agree that I can’t oversell this one.
Variety blogger Ben Fritz did a bit of snooping and had this to say:
I checked with a source I have who is close to Gearbox and the best info I can confirm is that Gearbox has definitely had conversations with Microsoft about doing a new “Halo” game and is very excited at the prospect. However, last my source heard, there was no deal in place. So as far as I can tell, it’s quite possible Gearbox will be doing “Halo 4,” (or whatever they end up calling it), but it’s not a certainty yet.
So it seems at least plausible that the new Gearbox project could indeed be a fourth iteration (or 5th if you count Halo Wars) to the extremely popular Halo series. The question in my mind is, why switch from Bungie? Perhaps they wanted too much money?
What do you guys think? Can another company maintain the standard set by Halo 3? Do you care as long a Master Chief lives?

Halo 3 News Mashup

It might not be quite as big as the iPhone launch but for gamers it’s been anticipated for months and months and months. Halo 3 hit stores last night at midnight and the reviews and commentary are rampant. I’ve put together a list of stories that will get you up to speed on the game fast.
Halo 3 Sucks Video

Spoiler alert, if you’d rather wait until you have game in hand to find out all the gory details of the new Halo 3 game then you might want to skip this video. Some “dudes” managed to get their hands on an advance (pirated) copy of the final game and put together this goofy video of a bunch of the in game stuff we haven’t seen yet. Lots of “Halo 3 Sucks” commentary in the background too. I’d say they were drunk but I didn’t realize nerds knew how to drink.

More Halo 3 Screenshots - Flamethrower And Firebombs Reign

A few more Halo 3 screen shots have been released. This time they depict Master Chief wielding the infamous Flamethrower. There’s also a new incendiary grenade called the Firebomb. Both weapons are guaranteed to have the Hola faithful liking their chops and prepping to lay out of work the week of September 25th.
The flamethrower does things that just weren’t possible in Halo 2. This is, more or less, a living flame. “If you shoot a pillar, the liquid in the flamethrower will adhere to it and burn there,” O’Connor explained. “Likewise with the floor and with bad guys. It will cause continual damage to a vehicle. When the flames start to cool down and evaporate, it stops causing damage. If you’re lucky enough to keep it on a Warthog, then you will in fact take it down with a flamethrower.”
