The iPhone’s Next Frontier
Back in the day it was the Adult Entertainment industry that really drove the VHS market. It could be argued that it’s the same industry that’s driving the DVD market. However, the Internet has put a serious crimp in the industry making sexy, nude and explicit content readily available without ever having to leave your home. With the release of the iPhone 2.0 and it’s 3G/Wifi capabilities the Adult Industry powerhouses are looking to cash in on people insatiable need for sex. Vivid, a leading adult entertainment company based in Los Angeles, says that 50% of its mobile browser traffic now comes from iPhones. The company expects that to grow with the release of Apple’s new model on July 11.
Penthouse is investing tens of millions in digital R&D, says its CEO, Marc Bell. “The iPhone is a beautiful medium,” Bell says.
Digital Playground, a high-end adult production company based in Van Nuys, California, is launching a new portal that will automatically adjust to the iPhone’s browser
Pink Visual, also based in Van Nuys, will likewise launch a new portal aimed at the 3G iPhone this summer. The company’s first iPhone site has been attracting 3,000 new visitors a day. It was designed specifically for Apple’s device: the videos are re-sized to fit its horizontal screen when the device is turned sideways.
I can’t ay I’m all that surprised. What I’m surprised about is the AE industry is really just now embracing the iPhone and what it could mean for them. The problem is, the Internet makes it easy to get to free content, and the iPhone just makes it that much easier. Much like all other media outlets, the AE industry has to figure out how to make people want what they’re selling.
