Google GeoEye-1 Takes A Picture

Last week the GeoEye-1 satellite, which is co-owned/sponsored by Google, took a photo(above) of the Kutztown University campus in Pennsylvania. The satellite is primarily funded by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency(NGA) with Google being the second largest funder.

What’s It Like To Work For Google?

Ever wondered what it must be like to work for Google? I have. One can’t help but wonder, even if you’d never really want to work there. Do the Googlebots live in cubes like the rest of us, subject to TPS reports and subject to the never ending whims of self absorbed managers? Here’s a few photos showing some of the “fringe benefits” of working for Google. There’s also a video here we posted way back. Yeah, companies could take a lesson or two on how to make employees want to come to work.

The Google Navy

More proof that Google is out to take over the world comes in the recently filed patent application for a “Water-Based Data Center”. Essentially Google sees the worlds oceans as a potential energy source and thinks having datacenters located on ships is a good idea.

‘computing centers are located on a ship or ships, which are then anchored in a water body from which energy from natural motion of the water may be captured, and turned into electricity and/or pumping power for cooling pumps to carry heat away from computers in the data center.’

Millions Suffer After Google Crashes Gmail

Well this is a first, for me anyway. I’m sure it’s happened before but I’ll be damned if I can remember when. It’s roughly 6pm EST and when I try to get to my Gmail I’m greeted with this awesome 502 Server Error.

We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to use your account while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue.

Please try accessing your account again in a few minutes.

Well it’s been a few minutes and NOTHING! OMG, I think I might have an anxiety attack. Please God make it come back… lol Way to Google, I guess the beta tagline really is warranted.

Google Ordered To Turn Over All YouTube User Data

Well it was bound to happen, Google got spanked by a federal judge and ordered to turn over all data on what YouTube users watched to Viacom. That’s every bit of data on every single video ever watched since 2005. I guess Viacom got ahold of the RIAA playbook. With the media giants burning the candle at both ends eventually it’s going to melt.

Google and Viacom said they were hoping to come up with a way to protect the anonymity of the site’s visitors. Viacom also said that the information would be safeguarded by a protective order restricting access to the data to outside lawyers, who will use it solely to press Viacom’s $1 billion copyright suit against Google.

Still, the judge’s order, which was made public late Wednesday, renewed concerns among privacy advocates that Internet companies like Google are collecting unprecedented amounts of private information that could be misused or fall unexpectedly into the hands of third parties.

“These very large databases of transactional information become honey pots for law enforcement or for litigants,” said Chris Hoofnagle, a senior fellow at the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology.

Welcome to the 21st Century folks, if it didn’t know it by now, any rights you think had, well they’re pretty much non-existent.

GMail Ups Storage To 4GB

While reading through my mail this morning I noticed that GMail had apparently bumped my storage limit up to 4GB. I didn’t “buy” any premium service or anything so I’m guessing this is a standardized move across the board. Anyone else noticed their storage capacity increased?

Google Buys Feedburner Moves Closer To Owning The Web

google-feedburner.jpg

It’s been rumored for days and now confirmed by Techcrunch, Google has indeed bought the RSS Management company Feedburner for $100 million. That’s not bad for a company that started only about four years ago with $10 million in startup capital. The deal is an all cash deal and puts Google in a position to stake a sizable claim in the in RSS Advertising market.

What’s that mean for you an me? It means we should soon be seeing the ability to inject Adsense into our RSS feeds and Adwords advertisers will have another option for displaying their ads along with the search and content networks.

What’s Hot Today - Google Hot Trends

Google launched a new tool recently that everyone should check out. It’s called Google Hot Trends and it’s a new feature that gives a point in time list of the top 100 hot searches. This is something you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on as it will give you insight into what might be hot topics in your niche you need to be targeting right now, or even things that may be emerging. You can even go back in time and see what was hot on a particular day.

How does this differ from the typical searches or top keyword lists that are compiled? Hot Trends analyzes keywords and phrases and compares that against historical data looking for significant deviations from what would be considered normal for that keyword or phrase. Looking at the list as of this writing these are some of the things we find.

igasm.jpgOn the list at #21 is the iGasm. Sounds like the next big thing from Apple right? Wrong. A quick glance tells us the iGasm is a new sex toy being offered by sex shop Ann Summers. It’s a vibrator that hooks to an iPod an allows one to “massage to the beat” if you will. We also find out Apple is threatening to sue Summers over the posters of the iGasm gadget.

The hottest search right now is WCCO, followed closely by WCCO Weather. WCCO is the station identifiers for Minneapolis TV and radio stations. The Minneapolis area was under Tornado Warnings earlier today.

viz.pngYou’ll also notice that “National Geographic Bee” is on the upswing. Did you know the National Geographic Bee concluded yesterday? Did you also know that fourteen year old Catlin Snaring won the contest by correctly identifying the imperial capital of Vietnam (Hue) and the administrator of the island of Lampedusa (Italy)? Beyond the fact she knew the answer to both of those is the fact she won without missing a single question.

Google Hot Trends is a tool you’ll want to make sure you bookmark. It it can warn you when topics are beginning to take off and may give you an advantage over the competition by being one of the first to cover the topic. The list changes frequently so you’ll need to keep an eye on it. For you developers out there, a plugin, or FireFox plugin that monitors this list would come in very handy I would think.
