Top 8 Large Hadron Collider Videos

The Large Hadron Collider has become fodder for tons of viral videos. Some are hilarious, others are informative, and the best are somewhere in between. Since it’s going to be offline until who knows when, here are some great LHC videos to tide you over.
Public Dubs Large Hadron Collider “Halo”

Fed up with “the contrived acronyms that plague the world of science,” the RSC says it “picked a suggestion which is simple, memorable, and brings to mind the deserved grandeur of perhaps the most important experiment ever built.”
“Halo conjures visions of radiant beauty, power and wisdom. The circle of light reflects the collider’s form; it is a crowning achievement of science and engineering. It also gives more than a nod to the experiment’s importance to religious debate.
Gordon Freeman Is Working On The Doomsday Machine

Ahh, now here’s a juicy tidbit for all you Half-Life fans out there. Gordon Freeman has been spotted working on the Large Hadron Collider. Yeah, that’s right, ole Gordon is there on the job so you can rest assured if something does come through any black hole created by this thing, we’re in good hands. For the rest of you that’s going “Who the frak is Gordon Freeman and why do I care?”.
Gordon Freeman is a theoretical physicist working at the fictional Black Mesa Research Facility, Gordon is involved in an experiment which accidentally opens an interdimensional portal, releasing confused, hostile beings into the complex. The first Half-Life sees Gordon fighting through the facility alongside fellow employees, engaging the aliens as well as a black ops military unit sent in to contain the situation. In its sequel, Half-Life 2, Gordon is introduced to a dystopian world decades after the Black Mesa incident, and an interdimensional imperial force has established itself as the ruler of Earth. Gordon then joins a human resistance group and aids them in their struggle with the oppressors.
You should care because like I said, when this thing goes really live and creepy things start appearing in peoples closets or basements then this is the dude you want working things out. Basically if you ain’t played the game then you got no idea what I’m talking about so just keep scratching your head wondering, it’ll all be over soon.
Thanks to the Useless Junk crew for this juicy morsel.
World Survives Doomsday Machine Startup And Testing
Hey, guess what??? The world didn’t implode early this morning as CERN fired up the Large Hadron Collider to begin testing the proton beams. I guess they weren’t using Windows since the thing actually booted up and worked, in fact, it apparently worked better than expected.
“The machine worked better than anyone expected. It took only 55 minutes for physicists to steer beams around the full 27km, and the LHC worked on its first go, far better than anyone dared to hope.”
Ok so we survived the first attempt. Truth is there are colliders in the world that output much more power than the LHC is currently using, but remember, they are only testing the beams, making sure they can be controlled. Aside from blowing up half of the Swiss/French countryside there’s not much risk with this. That all changes around Oct. 21 (I think that’s right) when the beams are aimed in opposite directions and fired at the same time. Again, the whole point being “to see what will happen when they collide”. So, just think of the possibilities for the realism in haunted house this Halloween.
Here’s a few more photos of the Large Hadron Collider courtesy of Dvice, check them out for more. I’ve also include a video that does a great job explaining what this thing does (although it skips the part where the Black Hole forms).
p.s. For you crazy nutzo peeps that think I’m serious with all this end of the world crap, chill out. Let us have our fun.
