Netflix Promising Mac Movie Streaming By Years End

Hey Mac heads, Netflix is finally getting with the programming and promising us a Mac version of their streaming movie viewer by the end of the year. I’ll hold my breath on this one.

You can watch these online on your PC or your TV via a Netflix ready device. Netflix ready devices include the Netflix Player by Roku, which is available now, the LG BD300 Blu-ray Network player, which will be available in a few days, or the Xbox 360, which will instantly stream movies from Netflix later this fall. And, for all of you Mac users (of which I am one) we’ve been busy working getting a solution that will allow you to watch instantly on your Mac. So hang in there - we’ll have something for you by the end of the year.

Protecting Mac OS X From Malware

Ran across this Slashdot article referencing another article put together by a well known hacker (Dino Dai Zovi) that makes some suggestions for how the upcoming MAC OS X mini-update Snow Leopard could take to prevent future malware attacks. It’s an interesting read if for no other reason than to gain a bit of insight into what the exploits try and do.

MAC OS X Mini-Update: Snow Leopard

There’s a bunch of talk floating around about the upcoming MAC OS mini-update “Snow Leopard” (aka: OS X 10.6). While the screen shots disappear about as fast as they appear (no doubt Apple trying to keep up the suspense) a few of the more interesting details have emerged. It appears the update will include things like Safari 4.0’s “Save As Web Application” feature and Exchange integration with th Address Book. Another big egg drop is the fact the PowerPC world may be at an end. Rumor is, Apple will finally drop backwards compatibility for the PowerPC and only Intel CPUs will get to experience the awesomeness that will be OS X 10.6. Personally, I can’t wait.

How To Run Multiple Virtual Domains On Your Macbook Pro

How to support multiple virtual domains on a Mac is a question I had after recently purchasing a Macbook Pro. Part of the motivation in that purchase being that I wanted to get all my development stuff onto a portable platform so I could “work” when I’m supposed to be on vacation or from some destination deep in jungles of a remote island in the South Pacific or the couch. What I found was a lot of information on how to get one website to work under Apache but not multiple sites without manually switching them, it was a real pain, but after a good bit of research and some trial and error, I’ve come up with a solution that works for me.

First a few assumptions will be made:
1. Your running 10.4x of Mac OS. This might work on a previous version but I can’t confirm that.
2. You already have Apache & PHP preinstalled. (My Macbook Pro came this way I just had to turn them on).
3. Your using MySQL 5 (I’m running MySQL 5.0.45 for OSX 10.4 for i686).
4. You have the Mac utility NetInfo Manager installed (If you don’t have it, you should be able to install it from your install CD’s)

First things first. The only thing you should have to install is MySQL, so after running the installation when you go to “System Preferences” you should have a MySQL icon. Clicking that brings up a MySQL Server Status screen.

- Click the button to start MySQL
- Check the box to start the MySQL Server on Startup (this is optional but you’ll have to remember to always go start it up).

That done, our objective is to create an Apache/PHP/MySQL development environment that’s completely contained on the Mac and can support multiple virtual domains.

Jim Allchin to Bill Gates: I Would Buy A Mac Today

I keep asking myself why I keep thinking I want to buy a Mac. I’ve used Windows for years, not because I’m a fan of Microsoft, but like many others, it’s what I grew up with and have become accustomed to. Sadly, the more time goes by the more I’m starting to realize that what I’m accustomed to isn’t such a great thing and maybe it’s time for a change. When I see stuff like this, it makes me wonder even more if I shouldn’t just get in the car and head to the Apple Store.
